After the two men had had their chaste and separate showers and had dressed again in the garments they had been wearing when they’d arrived at Ford’s apartment, they set out together on their mission to identify the nature of beauty; or rather, Art’s specific notion of what constituted that elusive ideal.

“I think our first stop will be my father’s home. His collection of art glass is housed there, and I’d like you to examine it thoroughly before arranging for it to be stored elsewhere. I’m not sure what sort of facilities are available for that purpose at the museum, but if there isn’t room to store it there, we can certainly arrange to lease a secure warehouse elsewhere.”

“You said it was a small collection?”

“Well, yes. Small in comparison to his collection of automobiles, for instance, or to the collection of Asian objects around which the Falmouth was originally built. But substantial, nevertheless. You’ll see soon enough.”

By this time they were ensconced in the tiny cabin of the decrepit-looking Volkswagen. Art was driving the little car skillfully, weaving through the heavy mid-afternoon city traffic with a degree of elan that Ford found slightly unnerving. He grasped the handhold above his door tightly and sent a silent prayer heavenward as Art stomped on the brakes, narrowly avoiding a collision with the bright orange and green taxicab that had stopped abruptly in front of them. Swearing softly, Art swerved, then released the brakes and accelerated around the offending cab with an indignant toot of the horn.

“Would you believe this little beast makes less than fifty horsepower? She has no trouble fending for herself in the bumper-to-bumper congestion of city streets, but she’s a bit hairier on the freeway. That little motor behind us will only push her to seventy miles an hour or so on the flats, maybe seventy-five if we’re going downhill and have a strong tailwind. If the wind’s against us, or a steep hill ahead, forget it!” Art grinned with obvious pride at the hateful car’s shortcomings. Ford wisely kept his mouth shut, his free hand poking between the seats in a vain search for a seat belt.

“It’s a 1957 model. You won’t find what you’re looking for because belts weren’t required back then, but I’ll take it a bit easier if that would make you feel better.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m as cool and relaxed as can be, and have every confidence in your driving skills!” Ford said through gritted teeth.

“You’re a bad liar, my friend. An admirable trait! I’m sorry to have made you uneasy.”

For the remainder of the hour-long trip to his father’s country estate his driving was much less aggressive, and Ford eventually did relax as they motored along the interstate in the slow lane, comfortable enough now to enjoy their conversation, which was carried out in voices raised in competition with the noisy rush of air from the open windows (for the car suffered from not only an abominable lack of
